Born in San Diego, CA in the mid eighties, DJ Kali was raised in households that had a mix of all different genres of music playing. This early exposure to a consistent stream of great music led him to begin developing a passion for playing and seeking out new music. At the age of eight years old he began attending a performing arts school where he was exposed to the technicalities of creating the music he was hearing and began considering music as a real lifetime career. Over the next few years DJ Kali would continue to study music and as he grew older he was convinced that music would be his career when his older brother San Diego Hip Hop Artist Dubble 0 Beez began recording his first raps. While he looked up to his older brother, Dj Kali decided that he didn’t want to be a rap artist and instead put his full focus on becoming a DJ. With no money to purchase turntables Kali focused on studying the greats who had came before him, DJ’s like; DJ Kid Capri, Jam Master Jay, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Dj Red Alert. After spending countless hours studying the techniques of other DJ’s as well as working to save money for his own equipment, DJ Kali saved enough to purchase his first set of turntables and a mixer.
With his new equipment DJ Kali immediately set out to dominate the San Diego region, with his first gig being a Mothers Day BBQ at his cousins house. From that family party DJ Kali was able to network his way into securing consistent club, house parties and concert gigs. Always one to take advantage of every opportunity presented to him, DJ Kali also created and released his very first mix tape entitled “Daygo City’s Unsigned Hype” which featured all San Diego artists and really solidified DJ Kali as a serious mix tape DJ in the region. The release of his first project led to Kali being sought out by first artists across San Diego then all across the West Coast who all wanted DJ Kali to take a part in their mix tapes. The release of these mix tapes and his ever growing buzz as a DJ who could keep club patrons dancing till the lights came on led Kali to be chosen to not only act as Crooked I’s DJ when he came to San Diego but also too his opening for The Game during his San Diego performances. DJ Kali’s buzz in the San Diego region was undeniable as media took attention landing him feature stories in Southwest Bound and Addicted 2 Vinyl Magazine as well as on the DubbCnn website.
The Dj Kali brand is growing in fame and value everyday as he is actively sought out by artists to work with on their mix-tapes and club promoters to rock their next event. To date DJ Kali has released 15 of his own mix tapes and worked on a considerable amount more of other artist’s projects. DJ Kali has held down regular DJ gigs at San Diego clubs such as Faces, Belo, Decos, On Broadway and Sin. With a reputation that grows every day and a deep love for his home state, DJ Kali is taking his West Coast swagger to a level of success that can only be described as “World Wide.”
